Alejandro Cadena | Co-Founder & CEO, Caravela Coffee

A pioneering specialty coffee company dedicated to building a more equitable and sustainable coffee industry. With nearly 25 years of experience in specialty coffee, Alejandro combines a background in economics and finance with a deep commitment to improving outcomes for coffee-producing communities.

A graduate of Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Alejandro began his career in investment banking in London and New York before returning to Colombia in 2002 to help transform the coffee sector. Under his leadership, Caravela has grown into one of the world’s leading specialty coffee exporters and importers, connecting thousands of smallholder farmers across seven Latin American origins with roasters in more than 35 countries.

Alejandro has been a strong advocate for transparency, traceability, and long-term value creation throughout the coffee supply chain. His vision has helped establish direct and lasting relationships between producers and roasters, while driving investments in farmer education, quality improvement, and sustainable sourcing practices. Reflecting this commitment, Caravela became a certified B Corporation in 2014, reinforcing its belief that business can be a force for good.

Today, Caravela works with approximately 3,000 coffee-growing families, serves more than 300 roasters worldwide, and employs over 250 people, most of them based in producing countries. Through Caravela’s mission to make coffee as prosperous as it is delicious, Alejandro continues to champion a coffee industry where environmental stewardship, farmer prosperity, and commercial success go hand in hand.
